Lady Cougars earn win over Hanahan

The Colleton County Lady Cougar varsity basketball team opened conference play last week with losses to May River High School (57-36) and Lucy Beckham (56-40). Midweek, Colleton County earned a 52-37 win over non-region opponent Hanahan High School.

The Lady Cougars are currently 8-4 overall and 0-2 in Region VII-AAAA competition.

In the Region VII-AAAA road-opener against May River High School on Tuesday, December 14, Colleton County led 20-15 at the half, but the Sharks came back strong in the second half outscoring the Lady Cougars by 26 points. Shandi Brown scored 19 points for Colleton County and claimed 2 rebounds. Heaven Green added 10 points. Makayla Chisolm had 5 points and Cherish McFadden scored 2 points.

Against Hanahan High School on Wednesday, December 15, the Lady Cougars overall field goal percentage was 30-percent and hit 11/21 free throws. Brown led with 17 points and 7 rebounds. Bethany Moore added 16 points.

Other scoring included Chisolm with 14 points and Green contributed 5 points.

Colleton County’s Bethany Monroe was named Player of the Game against Hanahan High School. Earlier this season, Shandi Brown was named Player of the Game against Battery Creek, Academic Magnet and Woodland High School.

No individual stats were available as of press time for the loss against Lucy Beckham.

Colleton County will host the Cougar Classic Basketball Tournament on December 21-22 with a four-team bracket including Beaufort Academy, Branchville High School, Stall High School and Colleton County. The Lady Cougars will face Branchville High School in game two of the tournament Tuesday, December 21 at 6 p.m. Earlier in the afternoon Beaufort Academy and Stall High School will compete in game one. Winners of the opening round will play at 6 p.m. Wednesday and losers will battle earlier in the afternoon at 3 p.m.
