The Lady Cougar Soccer team earned a 5-0 at-home win over Colleton Prep Academy on Senior Night, held on Monday, April 11. Colleton County is currently 5-8 overall and 0-8 in Region VII-AAAA.

Against May River High School on March 29 on the road, the Lady Cougars fell 7-1. Sierra Obenaus scored off an assist from Jeana Matthews. Amaya LaPresta had 19 saves.

“We came out and scored within the first five minutes of the game, catching them by surprise.” said Coach Danielle VanHulst. “With that being said, our team decided it was time to stop working as one. May River came back and started to attack hard.”

The Lady Cougars were shut out 10-0 against Lucy Beckham on April 1st on the road. Amaya LaPresta had 24 saves in the game. “Against Lucy Beckham we had the same attack being played against us and we struggled to defend it,” said VanHulst.

In a 12-1 at-home loss against James Island High School on April 8th, Colleton County’s Sierra Obenaus scored the lone goal. “We were able to hold James Island for the first 15-20 minutes because we came out as a team and played what we had been working on,” said VanHulst. “After they scored the first goal, we fell apart as a team. Sierra was able to dribble through James Island from halfway and score within the last two minutes.”

Colleton County defeated Colleton Prep 5-0 on Senior Night after leading 2-0 at the half. Obenaus scored three goals with assists from Keylin Daliva and Laura Reynolds. Daliva and Arasley Sosa added a goal each.

“This was a good game for us,” said Van Hulst. “We were missing only one starter this game and we had been practicing athletes at various positions, which seemed to help. We played more as a team, and I was proud of their effort. There was better communication and they started to show they know how to play soccer. During halftime, I had to remind the team that we know how to play soccer and encouraged them to begin putting passes together. After taking a beating in region play, the girls had mental walls they had to break down.”

“During the second half, we had calmed down and started to pass,” said VanHulst. “Jana Matthews received the ball off a wall pass and did a beautiful one touch serve to the middle that landed right in front of Arasley Sosa, who was able to put it in the back of the net. This is something we practiced multiple times. In a repeat of the same play, a serve by Matthews landed in front of Destiny Ready who passed it off to Daliva, who then scored.”

“Our defense consisting of Lyndsey Montjoy, Faith Bishop, Lauren Reynolds and Caroline Stephens, defended the through balls perfectly and our keeper helped out by coming out of her box more and playing,” said VanHulst. “This helped our defense run less and stay in the game. LaPresta had 17 saves to keep us in the game and our midfield did better this game. We are starting to become one and hopefully we can continue this as we finish the season after spring break.”

“This season in general has been rough on us due to multiple injuries,” said VanHulst. “It seems every time someone heals, someone else gets hurt. We have not had our starting line up on the field at the same time since our first game of the season. We are also struggling to buy in to what is being taught. We have reviewed the same thing at practice numerous times. When the defense and keeper are worked for majority of the game, the scoreboard is bound to reflect it.”

Colleton County will travel to Beaufort High School on Monday, April 25 and to Bluffton High School on Wednesday, April 27. The Lady Cougars will play Hilton Head High School on Friday, April 29 (away) in the final Region VII game of the season.
