Lady Cougar Softball claims Region VII championship

The Colleton County High School Lady Cougar varsity softball team claimed the Region VII-AAAA championship following wins over May River High School (2-0, 4-0) in a two-game series last week. Colleton County also earned wins over Bluffton High School (2-0) and James Island High School (12-8) later in the week. The Lady Cougars are currently 13-0 overall and 10-0 in Region VII-AAAA.

In game one of the two game series against May River High School played at home Monday April 26, senior Whitley Weathers was stellar in the circle, allowing no earned runs on five hits, striking out seven and issuing no walks. Weathers also went 2-3 at the plate with an RBI. Makayla Chisolm was 2-3 with an RBI and Sydney Howard was 2-3. Shandi Brown was 1-3.

On the road for game two against the Sharks, Weathers went the distance, allowing four hits and striking out six. Brown went 2-4 at the plate with 2-RBI’s and scored once in the game. Howard was 2-3 and Weathers was 1-2.

Against Bluffton High School on Thursday, April 29, Colleton County outhit the Eagles 4-1 for a victory. Weathers hurled a one-hitter and struck out 12 across seven innings of work. Brown, Howard, Jordan Slocum and Shamorie Overton had a hit each.

Weathers continued to dominate the field against James Island High School Friday April 30. She earned the win in the circle allowing eight earned runs on 17 hits, striking out eight. Weathers went 3-5 at the plate driving in six runs. Brown was 3-5 with an RBI and scored three runs and Chisolm was also 3-5 with an RBI and scored twice. Howard, Overton, Pellum and Lanasia Sanders had multiple hits in the game. Bailey Cox, Kennedy, and Slocum each recorded a hit.

Colleton County has non-region games against remaining on the scheduled against Bamberg High School Tuesday May 4 (away) and Woodland High School Monday, May 10 (home). The SCHSL AAAA State Softball Playoffs are set to begin Saturday, May 15 where Colleton County will host the Lower Bracket At-Large seed (still to be determined).
