Jones signs to play softball

Colleton Prep senior Weslin Jones inked her National Letter of Intent to continue her academic and softball career at Charleston Southern University in North Charleston. The NCAA Buccaneers compete in Division I within the Big South Conference. Recruited by Charleston Southern as a middle-infielder, Jones verbally committed in October 2019.
Jones, a five-year varsity starter for the Lady Hawks, has played softball since she was six-years old and played on several local and state-wide travel teams. In addition, Jones was a key starter for the Lady Hawk Volleyball team and helped lead them to post-season play throughout her high school career.
Her accolades to date include SCISA All-Region Softball (8, 9, 10); Best Offense (softball, 8, 9, 10); SCISA All-Region Volleyball (8, 9, 10, 11); Best Defense (volleyball 8, 9) and Most Valuable Player (volleyball, 10, 11).
“The thing that stands out to me about Weslin is her respect for the game of softball,” said Lady Hawk Head Softball Coach Tiger Martin. “She wants to do whatever is asked of her to help her team win. She leads by example and never takes a play off. She is what you get when a great athlete has a great work ethic. I am so glad to see her hard work and dedication rewarded.”
Jones credits her travel ball play for helping her in the recruiting process. “Playing travel ball helped me get recruited, as well as many different camps throughout the years,” said Jones. “Coach Tony Mendez and Coach Katrina Moffett helped me the most with getting to this point in my career. These coaches started coaching me from the time I was 12 years old and always helped me no matter what the circumstances were.”

Jones said the decision to attend Charleston Southern was greatly influenced by Charleston Southern Head Coach Venus Taylor. “She greatly influenced my decision because of how much she believed in me during our hitting lessons and already helped me improve and get better,” said Jones. “Academics was also a big part of my decision because they offer a physician’s assistant program.”
Charleston Southern Softball Head Coach Venus Taylor said, “Weslin will be a tremendous asset to our team both on and off the field. Weslin possesses exceptional speed which should put her in a position to be a leader for us on the field and in the areas of on-base percentage, steals and run production. At the plate, she is a triple threat which will make it hard for our opponents to know how to play her.
“Weslin has an incredible work ethic and a great attitude. She is extremely coachable and driven. I look forward to coaching Weslin and seeing her achieve all her goals as a key contributor to our program.”
“I would like to thank my parents for many years of time and effort put into my softball career,” said Jones.
“I do not know many people that would go to the extreme my parents have to get me to this point in my career.”
Jones, who maintains a 5.0 GPA, is the daughter of Sonda and Wesley Jones of Walterboro.
She plans to study kinesiology and pursue a career as a physician’s assistant.
