Mr. John Clyde Hiott, age 82, entered into rest Saturday morning, December 4, 2021, at his beloved residence near Mashawville.  

Born April 22, 1938, in Colleton County, South Carolina, he was the son of the late Norman Clyde Hiott and the late Minnie DeWitt Hiott Platte.  He served our country faithfully in the United States Army having been stationed in Thailand during the Korean Conflict.  Following his time in service, he returned home and worked for a number of years with South Carolina Electric and Gas.   John possessed a strong and devoted work ethic.  He started and operated Sani-Serva Systems.  

John was a lifelong member of Sandy Dam United Methodist Church where he was faithful in his service to his Lord and church.  He served as the Church Administrator, was a Trustee, and was a member of the Pastor Parish Relations Committee.  He was awarded the Sandy Dam United Methodist Church Inspirational Leader Award and had also served on the cemetery and grounds committees as well as many other aspects of the church’s work.   He admired the outdoors in every aspect.  He loved being at his home on Edisto Beach and offshore fishing.   He was an avid hunter and greatly enjoyed raising and hunting button quail and hunting his beloved setters, “Honey Comb '' 1 and 2.   Each year, he cultivated a most beautiful garden.  He always shared his harvest with others and each year organized the highly anticipated corn break of his silver queen sweet corn which was a community favorite, giving the funds of his staple to his beloved church to meet their budget needs.  He also was an equestrian at heart and will forever be remembered for the bond he shared with his beloved “Gator” , his American Saddlebred Horse.  John, more than anything, was a family man.  Family was important to him and time with his grandchildren was paramount in his life.   He relished his wife’s food, especially her sweets.  

Surviving are: his wife, Mrs. Sherrill Busby Hiott; a son, John Christopher Hiott and his wife Ellen of Edisto Beach; a sister, Patricia Hiott Overton of Sun City; and two grandchildren, Brandon Christopher Hiott of Summerville and Bryce Ashton Hiott of Edisto Beach.  He is also survived by Sherrill’s four children, thirteen great grandchildren, and one great grandchild.  He is also survived by his beloved golden retriever, Honey, who was his constant companion.  He was preceded in death by his step-father, Mr. Roy Platte.  

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be directed in his memory to: Sandy Dam United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, care of 4916 Charleston Highway, Walterboro, South Carolina, 29488. 

Funeral services will be conducted 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon, December 8, 2021, from Sandy Dam United Methodist Church, 3422 Charleston Highway, Walterboro.  The Reverend Douglas Marchant officiating.   The family will receive friends prior to the funeral ceremony beginning at 12:45pm in the church social hall.
