As Jesus approached Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. When he heard the crowd going by, he asked what was happening. They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.” He called out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him. When he came near, Jesus asked him, “What do you want me to do for you?” “Lord, I want to see,” he replied. Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has healed you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus, praising God. When all the people saw it, they also praised God.
Luke 18:35-43
Many times in the gospels, Jesus is called the “Son of David.” Immediately, this name reminds us that Jesus is of the lineage of David, or is a son of King David’s family. This name also refers to prophesy regarding a king coming through David’s line: “Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever” (2 Samuel 7:16). This king is no ordinary human king because His reign will stretch into eternity. This tells us that “Son of David” is a title that reveals that Jesus is the long-awaited Messiah of Israel.
The life, death, and resurrection of Jesus accomplish the redemptive and restorative purposes of the Messiah. As prophet, the Messiah reveals God and God’s heart to mankind. As priest, Messiah makes atonement for mankind’s wrongdoing. And as king, Messiah reigns as Lord of God’s creation.
There is no one else qualified to redeem and save from sin. Is Jesus your Savior?
