Mrs. Jackie Holmes Hughes, 80, entered into eternal rest Saturday evening, May 16, 2020, at her home in Walterboro surrounded by the love of her family and under hospice care. She was the loving wife of the late Mr. John Henry Hughes.

Born November 21, 1939, in Horry County, South Carolina, she was a daughter of the late Willie Isaac Holmes and the late Rose Nell Cox Holmes. Jackie worked with J.P. Stevens in Walterboro for twenty years.   She retired from the Colleton County Disability and Special Needs Board.  She was a longtime member of Edgewood Baptist Church in Walterboro.  She will always be remembered for her love of gardening, taking special pride and giving great attention to her flowers and vegetables.  

Surviving are: her children, Wayne Smoak (Susan) of Clayton, North Carolina, Kathy Smoak Drawdy of Walterboro, Michael Hughes (Robin) of Pace, Florida, Clark Hughes of Walterboro and Debra Cartwright of Pace, Florida; five brothers, Billy Holmes of Little River, Roger Holmes of Little Mountain, Larry Holmes of Loris, Jeffery Holmes of Loris, and Jimmy Holmes of Loris; and three sisters, Jewel Stevens of Blythewood, Gail Strickland of Green Sea, and Joan Lewis of Loris; as well as a large host of beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Timothy “Timmie” Lehe Drawdy, Sr.; three sisters, Lucille Moroff, Betty Gore, and Phyllis Hendrix.

Flowers will be accepted, or for those that wish, the family has suggested that memorial contributions be directed in her memory to: Edgewood Baptist Church, 138 Wildwood Drive, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488.

In consideration of the extraordinary circumstances associated with the Coronavirus, the family will hold a private funeral service for Mrs. Hughes, at 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon, May 20, 2020, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro.   The Reverend Gary Hanna officiating.   Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Hendersonville Highway, Walterboro.  The funeral service will be live streamed from The Brice Herndon Funeral Chapels and Crematory Facebook page and website.
