The driver of an SUV was critically injured in a single car accident Ivanhoe Road Monday afternoon December 16th. The driver of the SUV slowly drove over the embankment into Ireland Creek. The truck overturned in the shallow water, trapping the driver with his head was under the water. Caden Moyer and Asher Caponetti, who watched the events unfold from the Ollie’s parking lot. They entered the water and made efforts to rescue the man. A Walterboro Police Officer also drove up on the accident he also entered the cold water and was able to help hold the unconscious man’s head out of the water. Addditional Walterboro Police Officers arrived quickly and also entered the water to assist. The five men were eventually able to free the man as the ambulance crew arrived from Colleton County Fire-Rescue. He was quickly placed into the ambulance where resuscitative efforts were administered. He required advanced airway placement and was transported to the helipad at Colleton Medical Center to meet with the CareFlight helicopter. He was flown to the Trauma Center at Trident Medical Center. The driver remains in critical condition at Trident. The man’s dog was also in the vehicle, but did not appear to be injured and was assisted by Animal Services. The Walterboro Police Department is investigating the crash.
