The USC Salkehatchie Indians claimed the 2019-20 Region X regular season title after a 94-83 win over Caldwell Tech Saturday afternoon in Walterboro.
The Indians (23-4, 10-1), hot on a nine-game win streak, will enter the NJCAA Region X Conference Tournament March 5-7 in Pinehurst, N.C., as the No. 1 seed. Salkehatchie moved up in the latest NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball Poll to 15th in the nation.
In Saturday's win over Caldwell Tech, Mardrez McBride scored 25 points to lead the Indians. Vince Cole chipped in 21 points and Kevin Williamson had 17 points. Jay Jefferson had 14 points and Keyon Wesley added 13 points.
"It was a special moment as we clinched the Region X regular season championship last night and the No. 1 seed in the tournament," said Coach Jake Williams. "I am incredibly proud and happy for our players. They have worked extremely hard on the court and in the classroom. They have earned it and deserve to be called champions.
"I'd like to thank our assistant coaches, John Koy Garmrath, Eric Simpkin and Vernon Lowndes," said Williams. "They do an amazing job with our team - on and off the court. Nothing is possible without them and we are blessed to have them in our corner. I'd also like to thank the fans and the community for their support. You have all been supporting this program long before I was here, and I am so pumped that we were able to share this moment on our home floor together. The community's loyalty and love for the program and players is special."
Salkehatchie was scheduled to honor its sophomores Tuesday Feb. 25 at 6 p.m. in a pregame ceremony prior to a non-conference game against S.C. Faith. The Indians will travel to Spartanburg for their final Region X game of the regular season against Spartanburg Methodist on Saturday Feb. 29.
