The Salkehatchie Indian Baseball team traveled to Spartanburg Methodist College on February 26 for a round robin that included Spartanburg Methodist and Southern Union State Community College. The Indians fell 5-2 against Southern Union State in game one and dropped the contest against the Pioneers 10-3 in game two. Salkehatchie is currently 1-17 overall.

Against Southern Union State, the Indians lost a heartbreaker after being tied at two in the bottom of the sixth inning when a walk would score the go-ahead run. Kenny Miller earned the start and went on to surrender four runs on three hits over five and two-thirds innings, striking out nine. Nolan McGonigle threw one-third of an inning in relief out of the bullpen.

Will McGuire, Eric Green, and Jalen Morris each collected one hit for Salkehatchie.

In game two versus Spartanburg Methodist, Salkehatchie fell behind early and could not recover in the 10-3 loss. The Indians struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing the Pioneers, giving up ten runs. Nate Kiser started on the hill for Salkehatchie and allowed six hits and eight runs over three innings, striking out six. Drew Thomas threw three innings in relief out of the bullpen.

Camron Gardner went 2-3 on the day for the Indians.

“Our offense has been pretty consistent as a whole,” said Coach Jeremy Joye following Saturday’s games. “Aiken native Kenny Miller did a phenomenal job keeping Southern Union’s offense at bay. The inability of our bullpen to come into tough situations and close the door is proving detrimental at the moment. We have a couple of weeks before we begin region competition, however, it is all about focus at this point.”

The Indians will travel to Florence where they will face Francis Marion JV onMarch 3 in a double header before hosting Saint Elizabeth University on March 5 with first pitch in game one scheduled for 1 p.m.
