A single vehicle accident on Exit 57 turned into a multiple vehicle accident during a thunderstorm related to Hurricane Debby. Colleton County Fire Rescue was working a single vehicle accident on Exit 57. Engine 26 was in the acceleration lane behind the accident protecting the scene. Traffic was moving slowly around the accident scene when a Freightliner semi-truck failed to slow down. The semi truck struck the rear of another semi causing heavy damage to both vehicles. After striking the guard rail, the lead truck was pushed into the other lane, striking a small car transport truck. That vehicle lost control and struck the parked fire engine. No one received any injuries in the second collision, but the southbound lanes were blocked. City of Walterboro units were called to block the entrance ramp at Bells Hwy. Additional County Fire-Rescue units were also assigned to the incident as well as several Sheriff’s Deputies to assist with the traffic. Southbound traffic was diverted to Bells Hwy. for approximately an hour until the scene could be cleared. Engine 26 received moderate damage and has been placed out of service until repairs can be made. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
