Two horses were ejected from their trailer during a Sunday car crash on Interstate-95. Both horses died.

According to Colleton County Fire-Rescue Chief Barry McRoy, a flatbed Ford vehicle was pulling a horse trailer when the driver allegedly fell asleep. The vehicle swerved into the wooded median and hit a large tree. The trailer was severely damaged and the two horses were ejected.

There were three people in the truck: none of them were injured.

“One of the horses was dead at the scene, while the second horse was severely injured,” said McRoy. “One of the occupants of the truck was a veterinarian and was the owner of the horse. She had medications to euthanize the animal.”

The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash. The crash occurred near the 51-mile marker at Walterboro on I-95 in the southbound lane. Because of the crash, traffic on I-95 was merged down to one lane for about 45 minutes, said McRoy.
