Honoring Our Mothers

Posted

“…do not forsake your mother’s teaching.”

Proverbs 1:9b

Our first teachers were our mothers. They taught us who we are. Our first concepts about ourselves were formed by watching our mothers smile at us and hearing the notes of delight as she spoke to us. We soon learned correction as the tone of her voice changed and she gave us what we later referred to as “the look.” As children, we took for granted precious days under our mother’s watchful care. As adults, we would never trade those priceless memories for anything, unless we could have one more day the way we remember them.

What did your mom teach you? Every mother has dreams and ambitions for her babies. I was a handful for my mother. I caused her trouble, grief, and more than her share of worry. So she prayed. She gave to God what she could not manage. She called my name out to the One who was her Shepherd, and He had mercy on me. I am sure that her prayers helped to make me who I am today.

Pray for your children. Teach those who will learn from you. Guide developing minds and hearts toward God. Let this younger generation see your genuine devotion to God. Grow as a servant in your local church. Be a help to your pastor.

As we honor our mothers, remember yours. Remember what she tried to teach you. Take a step toward the man or woman she dreamed that you could be. Make your mama proud!
