You may see Bruce Singleton driving around town in a beautiful Chevrolet Corvette, but there is much more to him than a perfect paint job and shiny chrome.
Mr. Singleton grew up in Colleton County and was educated in CCSD School District. During the summer he worked with his father as a brick mason. He has twelve siblings totaling thirteen children at home. He relays he’s the baby of the thirteen with a grin that only the baby of the family has. After high school he took a job at Asten Hill which changed to Aston Johnson. Currently, he works as a mechanic which probably comes in handy in some situations with his Corvette.
Singleton comments that he has always liked cars. His brothers used to race and that love of cars just “trickled on down” and he ended up a member of the Corvette Group of Walterboro. You’ve probably seen them in parades and occasionally at First Thursday. Being a part of these events drew their attention to the lack of things for young kids. In an effort to help, the Corvette Group of Walterboro became involved. They are involved in back to school events and have adopted a couple of elementary schools. For instance, at the end of last school year the Corvette Group went to Cottageville Elementary School and held an End of the School Year event. They grilled hot dogs and hamburgers and provided drinks to students. Judging by the laughter and rolling around on the ground, it was a big hit. They have taken local kids to a Charleston River Dogs game and also to a South Carolina State University football game. The Group even had the opportunity to work with the Make a Wish Foundation for a person in Hampton. The Group went there and had a cook out and spent time with him. He wanted to ride in a Corvette and they made that happen for him. Bruce comments that in the next year or so the Group is looking to provide a scholarship for one or two local students. The Corvette Group has also volunteered to work concession for CCHS. They picked some of the busiest games of the season to help; the first home game and homecoming to name two. They also have some big events coming up in November such as their annual cookout and a Youth Day. The Group has also started planning for their Easter Egg Hunt in 2025. Their hunt in 2024 was very well attended so the bar is set high. I’m sure they will pass that bar. Talking about the charitable events he is involved in, Bruce smiles and remarks that it gives you a feeling you just can’t describe. He tries to explain saying helping “makes you feel good on the inside. It warms you from the inside out.” Singleton wanted to make sure that it is a group effort from the Group for their charitable work and even wanted to recognize their sponsors. He cited Louie’s Liquors, Southern Style Barbershop, Bee City, Colleton County Sheriff’s Department, Four Corner Financial Group, Marine Repair Services, to name some. The Club has also partnered some with Lowcountry Community Action Agency.
One cannot be a part of a Corvette Club (of Walterboro) and not discuss cars just a little bit. Singleton has two. He has a C7 and also the new C8.
Bruce Singleton is a hometown hero. He tries to better his community through charitable service. Thank you, for all you do for Colleton County.
