Firefighters who responded to a house fire on Saturday night near Walterboro treated the homeowner for smoke inhalation.
Colleton County Fire-Rescue was notified of the fire through a 911-emergency call at about 7:17 p.m. on Saturday, May 8th for a house fire on Shallowford Road, near Walterboro.

Two firefighter-paramedics who live near the house were the first on scene. They found “light smoke coming from the home, and used a fire extinguisher to extinguish the fire on the stove,” said Barry McRoy, chief of Colleton County Fire-Rescue.
More fire trucks soon arrived. Firefighters then used a large fan to help force the smoke from inside the doublewide mobile home.
According to McRoy, the house did sustain “substantial damage:” the kitchen wall behind the stove was damaged, along with the kitchen’s cabinets and the hood.
Firefighters then removed the burned stove from inside the house for the homeowner. The male homeowner was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation; however, he refused transport to the hospital for further treatment, said McRoy.
