Head-on collision sends three to hospital

A two-vehicle head-on collision sent three people to the hospital Tuesday afternoon Feb. 4.

At 3:25 p.m. a Mercury Mountaineer traveling north on Cottageville Highway struck a southbound Buick LaSabre head-on in the 1400 block of Cottageville Highway (U.S. Hwy. 17-A) near the pole yard.

The LaSabre suffered heavy damage and the 59-year-old male driver was initially trapped in the wreckage, suffering from multiple traumatic injuries. A female passenger received non-life threatening injuries.

Crews were able to free the man with hand tools. Both patients were quickly treated at the scene by firefighter-paramedics, then transported by ambulance to the Trauma Center at Trident Hospital.

The 70-year-old female driver of the Mountaineer received non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Colleton Medical Center by ambulance.

Traffic on Cottageville Highway in the area of the accident was down to one lane for about an hour.

The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. The Colleton County Sheriff’s Office assisted with traffic control.
