A Colleton man charged with the murder of his girlfriend is also facing additional criminal charges.

Billy McLean Head, III, 38, of Walterboro, is charged with the murder of 32-year-old Patricia Grooms.

Head is accused of shooting Grooms to death on Green Pond Highway on Nov. 12th.

The shooting allegedly occurred in front of Grooms’ young children.

The Colleton County Sheriff’s Office charged Head with murder about three days after the fatal shooting occurred. Then, late last week, the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office also charged Head with possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent and unlawful conduct toward a child.

Head originally told authorities that the shooting was done in self-defense. He was treated at the murder scene with non-life-threatening injuries: he had a laceration on his arm, according to Colleton County Fire-Rescue Director Barry McRoy.
