Give Me Eagles’ Wings

Are you reading the Bible through with me? Grab your pen and journal, and get ready to write your thoughts as you journey through the Bible.

Our scripture today comes from Deuteronomy 32-34 as we close out the Pentateuch.

In 32:11, Moses offers a song about Yahweh’s relationship to Israel, including all the ups and downs.

He compares God’s relationship with Israel to that of an eagle parent watching over the nest. As a mother eagle disturbs the nest to make it uncomfortable for the growing eaglets, she is preparing them for changes to come. Then, when the time is right, the parent eagle will push the awkward, fearful eaglet out of the nest.

As the eaglet begins to fall, the parent swoops underneath to catch the chick and return it to safety. Those lessons continue daily as the eaglet becomes stronger, more graceful, and more understanding of the power in its wings.

If we are to grow in our faith, it will require discomfort, pain, and occasionally fear and disappointment. We must have faith, step out of our comfort zones and minister to people for the Lord. We also have to face the fact that our ideas and plans don’t necessarily add up to what God has in mind for us. That can sometimes bring great disappointment. But His way is always best.

God promises that He will never leave us nor forsake us. When we fully trust and obey Him,…well, Isaiah put it this way: “But those who trust in the Lord will renew their strength; they will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not faint.” Isaiah 40:34

In your journal today, list these words down the side of your page: DISCOMFORT, PAIN, DISAPPOINTMENT, FEAR. Next to each one of these feelings, write experiences you have had with each one of these in the past week. Pray and ask for God’s help in overcoming these feelings and experiences, and ask for His help and empowerment as you struggle with these feelings in the future.

PRAY: Lord, God, I want to soar on wings like an eagle in my faith. When discomfort, pain, disappointment and fear assault me, help me to trust you even more, so that when I pass the test, I am more like the Lord Jesus.
