The Edisto Chamber of Commerce recently hosted their second annual Freezin’ for a Reason Polar and Puppy Plunge. The event was held on February 27, 2021 at the beach near the Edisto Beach State Park.
Animal lovers from across the island signed up for the free event, which began at 11 a.m.
Plungers then took to the frigid ocean waters at 11:30 a.m.
Hot chocolate, hot cider and a raffle revived the slightly frozen swimmers after their exhilarating plunge.
The annual event is a way to benefit Animal Lovers of Edisto Canine Rescue, a nonprofit organization and Edisto’s only no-kill canine rescue.
On Saturday, the event was assisted by McConkey’s Jungle Shack, located at 108 Jungle Rd. on Edisto Beach: the restaurant also donated 10 percent of sales to the animal rescue.
According to event Coordinator Sherry Shipes, the event was attended by an estimated 41 people, plus a few curious onlookers. While the weather was nice and balmy, the water was a chilly 50 degrees. But great raffle items were offered, such as free kayak lessons. Additionally, donations to Animal Lovers K9 Rescue were being accepted. Donations to the animal rescue are still being accepted.
At the owner’s discretion, leashed dogs were welcomed and participated in the plunge. The very brave grabbed their bathing suits and masks and made it to the beach to take the plunge while others just enjoyed the festivities from dry land,

The local grocery store (currently BI-LO) will be undergoing some exciting changes in March 2021. March 14, 2021, will be the last day that the grocery store will be open as a BI-LO.
The grocery store will be closed from March 15, 2021 - March 30, 2021, and will reopen as a Food Lion on March 31, 2021.
If you are visiting during these dates please plan accordingly. There are two grocery stores within 30 minutes of Edisto that you may use during your stay: Food Lion - 6323 Savannah Hwy, Ravenel, S.C. 29470; and Piggly Wiggly - 6251 SC-162, Hollywood, S.C. 29449.
