A Florida man died in a Sunday crash that occurred on Interstate 95 near Walterboro.

Lazaro Barrios, 45, of Miami, Florida, died as a result of a single-car crash that occurred near the 48 mile marker of I-95, according to Colleton County Coroner Richard Harvey.

Barrios was driving a truck in the northbound lane when his 2019 Ford 250 had a rear tire blowout, which caused him to go off the right side of the highway. His vehicle then hit a tree, according to Master Trooper David Lucas, with the S.C. Highway Patrol.

The truck flipped over, leaving the driver trapped. The man was wearing a seat belt.

According to Colleton County Fire-Rescue Fire Chief Barry McRoy, rescue crews were on scene for three hours. The S.C. Highway Patrol continues to investigate this crash.

This was the second crash that fire-rescue crews worked in Colleton County on Interstate 95 in Colleton County on Dec. 5th. In the second crash, an adult man suffered critical injuries after he was ejected from a pickup on I-95 near the 53-mile marker. Crews were already en route to the above-mentioned fatal crash when this emergency call came in, said McRoy.

“A witness advised a southbound pickup truck pulling a trailer swerved to avoid hitting another vehicle that changed lanes in front of him,” said McRoy. “The pickup truck entered the grass median and flipped over multiple times.”

The driver, who was unrestrained, was ejected and found unconscious about 25 feet from the vehicle.

The man was flown to the Trauma Center at Trident Medical Center in North Charleston.

The S.C. Highway Patrol is also investigating this accident.
