First Thursdays return to downtown

PRESS RELEASE - First Thursdays downtown made a huge comeback last week! To kick off fall, the merchants of downtown Walterboro brought our community together by staying open late with huge sales, new arrivals, gift cards, and many other prize drawings. The City blocked off the street and provided music by Scott Grooms. The businesses provided a taste of fall with Oktoberfest themed decorations, appetizers, and drinks. The restaurants were open for dining and mingling. It was definitely a successful first night for all.

My goal in restarting this event is to offer our community an opportunity to come together to support and enjoy our beautiful downtown.

Prior to Covid, First Thursdays were a huge success for merchants to bring extra income and interest to downtown. My niece Christan Spires, former Tourism Director, and I enjoyed coming up with new ideas to make it bigger and more successful each month. There was always something new and exciting happening. Live music, karaoke, and shagging were just a few. It was very disheartening to see it shut down due to COVID.

However, two years later it has been a great pleasure to be able to reintroduce the event with my daughter (and business partner at Colleton Day Spa), Lauren Sutherland, along with all the support of the other downtown merchants.

The merchants need the support of our community and tourists. The beautification efforts and improvements made to the downtown area have made the event even better. Mayor Bill Young has been one of our biggest supporters and has attended every event. He’s always willing to listen and do what he and the City can to help us grow.

The Chamber of Commerce has also participated and expressed their interest in helping us expand. Being new to our area it’s nice to see everyone coming together to show their support.

Our goal is for the event to continue to expand down the entire length of Washington Street. We want everyone to remember that downtown is the place to be every First Thursday. If we can attract our community and tourists, we can also attract new businesses-which will help us grow.

Next month we are planning a “Friendsgiving” themed First Thursday on November 3rd from 5:30-8:00. Each business is asked to participate, and the entire community is welcome!

Please be on the lookout for our new Downtown Facebook page and details about the event coming soon.
