First Responders Train at Colleton Prep

Posted

Colleton County Fire-Rescue, Colleton County Sheriff’s Office, and Walterboro City Police Department conducted an active shooter training exercise at Colleton Preparatory Academy on Friday, March 14. The exercise began at 9:00 AM and depicted a real time active shooter drill. Law enforcement responded to the drill beginning with 911 dispatch, responding to the school, locating the shooter, clearing the buildings, and treating the casualties and injured. First responders were not told the scenario of the drill beforehand to make the exercise more realistic. This also was training for Fire-Rescue to triage, treat, and transport patients to the hospital by ambulance and Careflight, which landed on the academy football field. Colleton Regional Medical Center also took part in the drill, training for a mass casualty event at the emergency room. The three-hour exercise included participation by volunteer students and teachers at Colleton Prep Academy and gave them a very real simulation to how an active shooter event looks, feel, and sounds.
