Fatal wreck on Bells Hwy

An Allendale woman died in a single-vehicle high-speed wreck in the 7000 block of Bells Highway (S.C. Hwy. 64) on Thursday Nov. 17 at 12:49 p.m.

According to witnesses, the westbound Hyundai Tucson swerved off the road, then crossed into the eastbound ditch where it struck two driveway culverts and several trees.

The car received heavy damage in the collision and the female driver was trapped in the wreckage.

Fire-Rescue units arrived minutes later to find Emily Smith, 86, of Allendale had received multiple traumatic injuries and had no signs of life. The Coroner’s Office was notified and responded to the scene. Once they had completed their investigation, firefighter-paramedics used rescue tools to free the woman. She was transported by the coroner’s office.

The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
