Every Role is Strategic

Are you reading the Bible through with me? Grab your pen and journal, and get ready to write your thoughts as you journey through the Bible.

Today, read Exodus 16-18. In Exodus 17:8-16, Joshua and his troops engaged the Amalekites in the valley while Moses, Aaron, and Hur watched and prayed on the hill. Israel was advancing while Moses interceded in prayer with his hands raised. When his hands dropped from weariness, the Amalekites began to advance. So Aaron and Hur sat Moses on a rock and held up his arms as he interceded for Israel’s victory.

There are three important truths to be learned from these chapters.

First, sometimes we are like Joshua was in battle and in need of prayer. It is wonderful to find a friend or prayer group who will pray for us during our time of need. We have to lose some of our pride and be honest enough to ask friends and family for prayer support.

Second, sometimes we must be like Moses and do the interceding for others, praying for family members, a pastor, a friend in need, or a lost friend. Praying for those who ask for prayer brings them peace of mind. It is comforting to know someone is praying for us. As prayer warriors, we need to keep our promise and mean it…don’t just say, “I will pray for you,” but actually DO it. As praying people, we also feel less anxious about problems because we know everything is now in God’s hands.

Last, we need to be like Aaron and Hur. We can be an encourager by lifting up someone who has grown weary or discouraged.

Whether you’re a Joshua in the battle, Moses engaging in intercessory prayer, or Aaron and Hur providing encouragement and tangible support in times of stress, recognize your role and perform it faithfully. We need each other!

Pray: Lord God, it seems that I am almost constantly engaged in spiritual warfare and strife. Sometimes I find myself battling the enemy, while at other times I find myself interceding for those I love and support. Help me to always remember that each of these are important for Your people. Strengthen me for the battles I must face. Move me to offer practical assistance when I can. But most of all, remind me often of the supreme importance of prayer. Make me a prayer warrior like Moses.
