Colleton County election results were verified on Friday Nov. 6.
The General Election Canvass and Certification was held at the Voter Registration and Elections office where board members officially certified the Nov. 3 election results.
While other states, cities and counties have struggled to confirm election results, South Carolina had few problems.
“Our voting system went very well,” said Angela Upchurch, Director of Voter Registration and Elections. “We are very careful to follow all of the rules, maintain order, and get the job done efficiently.”
On Tuesday night, after polls closed, the absentee ballots had to be hand fed into the scanner. There were so many that the line of incoming poll watchers bringing in their machines and results from each of the 32 precincts bogged down, but eventually it cleared and the results were completed by 11 p.m.

The process ran smoothly and is much more user friendly. A county average of 68.33 percent of registered voters voted. There are 28,368 registered voters in Colleton: 19,463 people voted with 9,203 voting on Election Day, 7,524 voting early in person, and 2,665 voting absentee mail.
Republicans made up 54.12 percent of the total vote, and Democrats made up 45.20 percent.
Edisto Beach had the highest percentage of voters turning out with 82.61% followed by Petits with 76.54%. Walterboro #2 had the lowest turnout at 55.31%.
The election certification took several hours as board members worked to assess failsafe and provisional ballots, as well as votes made on incorrect ballots. Those ballots were corrected and scanned. Several ballots from voters who are not registered in Colleton County or South Carolina were not counted, as determined by board members.
State officials scheduled a recount on Tuesday Nov. 10 for District 90 between candidates Glenn Posey and Justin Bamberg.
