The November General Election is fast approaching.

According to the state election laws, there are some upcoming benchmark dates every citizen should be keeping in mind.

Colleton County’s head election official, Angela Church, had this message to residents and voters.

“All eligible citizens should register to vote. You cannot vote in South Carolina if you are not registered within 30 days of an election,” Church said. “Registering to vote does not mean that you have to, but at least you know you can. So, register to vote and do your research on the candidates. What have they said and what have they done? Have a say in what goes on in your community and country. Be a part of the solution.”

Following are the important upcoming dates about registering and voting:

Sept. 19

Deadline to mail General Election absentee ballots to military and overseas citizens.

Sept. 28

County boards must have in-office absentee voting machines available for General Elections.

Oct. 2–5 p.m.

Deadline to register to vote in person for General Elections, unless county board holds weekend hours.

Oct. 4

Deadline to register to vote online or by fax or email for General Elections.

Oct. 5

Deadline to register to vote by mail for General Elections and must be postmarked by this date.

Oct. 30

Deadline to apply for absentee by mail ballot for General Election. Voters should apply at least one week prior to Election Day to allow for adequate mail time.

Oct. 31

Last Saturday prior to General Election. County boards must hold absentee voting hours from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
