An elderly Colleton County man died on Dec. 23rd when he crashed his car into a pond.

The 81-year-old elderly man died from injuries he received in a single-vehicle crash that occurred in the 1600-block of Penny Creek Road. The car was first spotted by a family member of the victim. The car was partially submerged in a pond. The family member called 911 and also dove into the water, trying to lift a broken liftgate window; however, the woman was unable to get inside the vehicle.

“The temperature was 34 degrees. Firefighter-paramedics provided the woman with blankets and placed her in heated staff vehicle to warm, up,” said Colleton County Fire-Rescue Chief Barry McRoy.

Divers with Colleton County Fire-Rescue then went into the water, and found the man inside the truck. According to McRoy, he had no signs of life.

“The accident appeared to have occurred several hours prior to being discovered,” he said.

The vehicle was pulled from the pond by a tow truck, and the victim was then removed from inside the truck.

The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
