The Annual River Sweep was held on September 21. Over 50 bags of debris were collected by volunteers that turned out for the event.
Austin Mitchum the Manager of Colleton State Park explains the event, “Across the state, there will be different groups going out and essentially picking trash up on different beaches or rivers. We’re heading to Edisto in different access locations, to work from Stokes up to weeks landing with motorboats and picking up trash along the river. We’re going to go to three different access points. The first one was Mars Oldfield Landing, the second one was Good Hope Landing, and the third was Long Creek Landing. We’ll pick up trash at all those spots, clean up those access areas, pretty good, and then we’ll reconvene, meet up, get our basically trash counts to report.”
Dana Cheney from Keep Walterboro Beautiful participated in the event, “I’m involved because it’s what we do. This is not our district, its Colleton County but litter effects everyone.”
Mitchum adds, “We encourage people to come out and support the river sweep, the Commission and Keep Walterboro Beautiful. Residents should take care of the river, it’s their home, they recreate in the river. We would encourage the locals, and even people from out of town to come out and help us out for the next river sweep.”
