The Edisto Natchez-Kusso Tribe will hold its Pow Wow an April 25 and 26. Chief John Creel says, “We do this annually for the public, other tribes from other nations come to join with us, and we share our culture with the communities at large. The last few years, we’ve been doing the Pow Wow at Dorchester Heritage Center on Highway 78. We’ve had people from Canada, California, and many other states. The event has had great turnouts the last few years. And we’re going to be there again this time, this will be our 48th annual Pow Wow.”

The festivities will include dancing under the big tent. The Master of Ceremonies will be announcing the different types of cultural dances and the reasons of the purpose of those dances and the different dress. The regalia worn by dancers is different based on your style of dancing. Chief Creel explains, “Ladies could be the Shawl dancer or the jingle dancer. There’s southern dances for men, and there could be a fancy dancer or a grass dancer. So there’s different types of dancers, and they have different handmade regalia.”

There will also be a Native American Drum Competition using different types of drums. They will have food and native crafts available.

On Friday, the tribe will bring in 300 school children to enjoy the festival and show them various demonstrations.

Tribes from all over the country will attend the festival which is open to the public. For complete details go to the Edisto Natchez-Kusso Tribe Facebook Page.
