Two cars travelling southbound on Interstate 95 near Walterboro collided and then went off the roadway, crashing into trees. One person was killed in this crash and two others were injured.

According to Lance Cpl. Nick Pye with the S.C. Highway Patrol, the two cars – a 2018 Jeep SUV and a 2020 Chevrolet SUV – collided while both traveling in the southbound lanes of I-95. The crash occurred at 10:30 a.m. on March 10th near the 68 mile marker.

After both vehicles went off the roadway, each SUV went through a water-filled ditch and then struck trees in the wooded side of the roadway.

The driver of the Chevrolet SUV died at the scene. According to Colleton County Fire-Rescue Chief Barry McRoy, the driver of the Chevy SUV was trapped in the wreckage: this vehicle was carrying a “full load” in the rear, and some of the items propelled forward in the crash, trapping him.

The two adults in the Jeep – one driver and one passenger – received non-life threatening injuries, said McRoy. These two people were taken to Colleton Medical Center for evaluation.

Meanwhile, Firefighter-Paramedics had to use Holmatro Rescue Tools to extricate the driver of the Suburban.

According to McRoy, traffic in the southbound lanes of I-95 were shut down for nearly two hours.

The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
