A local teenager is lucky to be alive following a high-speed crash in the 9000 block of Charleston Highway (S.C. Highway 64) near Neyles Crossroads Thursday morning March 5 at 2:20 a.m.

The Nissan passenger car left the roadway and struck a power pole, breaking it into three pieces, before colliding with a tree. The car received massive damage.

Initial reports indicated the driver was trapped in the wreckage; however, she was out of the vehicle when responders reached the scene.

The first unit arrived to find the car in the front yard of a Neyles residence. Debris and power lines were across the highway and power was out in the area.

The 18-year-old female patient was found inside the residence with multiple traumatic injuries. Firefighter-paramedics quickly treated her at the scene, then transported her emergent to the Trauma Center at MUSC ambulance. Additional firefighter-paramedics assisted with her care during the transport to MUSC. No medical helicopters could fly due to poor weather conditions.

A child seat was found in the mangled car, but crews could not locate the infant. They used thermal imaging cameras and flashlights to search the scene and nearby woods, but did not locate a child. Other responders used rescue tools and began disassembling the car searching for the baby, when law enforcement reported the child had been safely accounted for and was not involved in the accident.

Units were on the scene for two hours and Charleston Highway was blocked during that time. Sheriff’s deputies assisted with traffic control.

The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating.
