On Saturday evening Jan. 2 at 11:35 p.m., a Colleton Fire-Rescue fire truck was working a single-car wreck on I-95 at the 60-mile marker northbound.
After being on scene for 45 minutes during a thunderstorm, a Nissan Altima traveling at a high rate of speed collided with the rear of rescue truck. Both vehicles received heavy damage and the Nissan caught fire.
The fire truck was still running, so firefighters engaged the pump and deployed a hose to extinguish the fire.
Initially, they had no access to the driver of the Nissan, since the rescue tools in the truck were damaged. Crews were able to use hand tools to break a window and force open a door to reach the patient.
Jamond Keith Riley, 42, of Hampton suffered multiple traumatic injuries and had no signs of life, said Deputy Coroner Wayne Walker.
No Fire-Rescue personnel were injured and the fire truck prevented the Nissan from hitting the other accident victims and the wrecker crew.
The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the wreck.
