The Colleton County Sheriff’s Office has requested the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) to investigate an officer-involved shooting that occurred at a residence on Jennings Court in Walterboro on Saturday, January 11, 2025.

Deputies were called to assist a citizen with a domestic-related incident. While one deputy spoke with the caller, a second deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the suspect as he pulled into the driveway. The suspect exited his vehicle and pointed a firearm at the deputy. In response, the deputy fired his weapon at the suspect through his windshield. The suspect surrendered and was taken into custody, and fortunately, no one was injured.

The suspect, Harley Alan Prater (30), has been charged with Domestic Violence of a High and Aggravated Nature, as well as Pointing and Presenting a Firearm.

SLED is currently handling the investigation, and it is standard procedure for deputies to be placed on administrative duty during such investigations.
