For Christians, Easter eggs are said to symbolize the emergence of Jesus Christ from the tomb and His resurrection. Dyeing and decorating eggs is a centuries-old Easter tradition. In some churches, eggs were dyed red to represent the blood Jesus shed on the cross. Eggs were also once a forbidden food during Lent, leading people to decoratively paint them as a way to mark the end of Lenten fasting, then celebrate by enjoying them on Easter.
