Baby born with drugs in system prompts local investigation

A Walterboro woman is under investigation after giving birth to a baby who tested positive for drugs.
According to officials with the Walterboro Police Department and to department incident reports, the 30-year-old Walterboro woman gave birth to a baby boy at Colleton Medical Center on August 7th and the child tested positive for THC and amphetamine. The mother also tested positive for the same substances, according to information provided to the police department.
The child was transported to a higher level of care due to his having respiratory issues at birth. At the time of birth, the mother was also being treated at Colleton Medical Center.
Local officials with the Department of Social Services were called to the hospital, in addition to police officers and the mother is being investigated for unlawful conduct with a child.
Since this is an active investigation, details are limited and the well-being of the baby is unknown. A spokeswoman for the Walterboro Police Department says that this case is still under investigation, as of press deadline this week.

Smoaks woman assaulted by intruder
A Smoaks woman was assaulted inside her house by a man who was demanding cash. According to a Colleton County Sheriff’s Office incident report, the victim told authorities that a man came into her house on August 17th and demanded money. When the victim refused to give any money, the man “raised his fist” like he was going to assault her. Then, the suspect shoved his fist into the victim’s mouth, the report states. This attack caused no physical injury to the victim, but the suspect then stole the victim’s purse. There was $45 inside the purse, the report states. The suspect then dumped the victims’ prescribed medicine into his pants and left. No arrests have yet been made.

Child rape case under investigation
Authorities are investigating a report of criminal sexual conduct against a child. According to a Colleton County Sheriff’s Office incident report, a complaint was given to the sheriff’s office that a child between the ages of 11 and 14 years old was being sodomized. This is allegedly occurring in a house in Walterboro. The case is under investigation.

Street racer arrested
Officers with the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a report of street racing that occurred on August 13 on Buckhead Road in Smoaks. According to a Colleton County Sheriff’s Office incident report, officers were called to Lowcountry Highway and arrested a 36-year-old man for reckless driving. The man was reportedly participating in street racing, the report states. The case is under investigation.

ID cards found at laundry mat
Officers with the Walterboro Police Department were called to the Coin Laundry mat on Bells Highway in Walterboro on when a person found a bag filled with multiple identification cards. In all, 29 different identification cards were found abandoned at the laundry mat. The cards all had different names on them. Inside the bag was also a Spanish 90-day Bible study book. The cards and the book were taken into evidence, the report states.

“Buck Naked” steals cigs
A man stole about $490 in cigarettes from the Enmarket in Walterboro.
According to a Walterboro Police Department incident report, the 54-year-old suspect reportedly stuffed 75 packs of assorted cigarettes into his pants. Each pack are valued at $6.50, the report states.
The man entered the store wearing a jacket and walked to the manager’s office, sliding a tub out from under a desk and then began stuffing packets of cigarettes into his jacket. In all, about 75 packs were stolen. The store clerk knows the victim by the street name “Butt Naked,” the report states. Officers took the store’s surveillance video and are investigating the case.

Road rage incident leads to argument
A 26-year-old Walterboro woman was assaulted by a 54-year-old Cottageville man during a road rage incident. According to a Walterboro Police Department incident report, officers were called to the Walgreens parking lot in Walterboro in reference to an assault between two drivers. The male driver claimed the female driver cut in front of him while driving on Robertson Boulevard. The male driver got out of his car at the intersection and tried to “speak” to the female driver about her cutting him off, the report states. The female driver then spit in the man’s face and began “yelling racial slurs at him,” the report states. The female driver did admit to spitting on the man and said the man grabbed her shirt, the report states. Both parties decided not to press charges against the other and no charges were issued.

Walterboro woman arrested for public drunkenness
A 49-year-old Walterboro woman was arrested for public drunkenness on August 18th after officers found her stumbling into traffic along Witsell Street in Walterboro. The woman was so intoxicated that she was holding herself up against a wall, a Walterboro Police Department incident report states. The woman was also found to be so intoxicated that the officers could smell alcohol from her, the report states. She was taken into custody for public intoxication/disorderly conduct and was taken to the Colleton County Detention Center.
