Burglar crawls into Colleton house through air vent

By Heather Ruppe

A Colleton County man who was watering his pigs discovered a burglary in progress, at his own house. According to a Colleton County Sheriff’s Office incident report, the man went to a well to water his pigs at about 11:30 a.m. when he saw a duffel bag laying near the water valve. The water valve is located behind the man’s house, on the rear corner of the property.

The homeowner opened the bag and several items inside that belonged to him. The man then returned inside his house, carrying the duffel bag. At that point, he noticed that his back door was unlocked. The victim also told authorities that he discovered boxes and containers in his bedroom closet had been opened, with items missing from inside. According to the incident report, the victim was missing two Tupperware containers, each filled with about $50 in silver coins; a set of keys that belonged to various vehicles on the property; and a box of bullets. The deputy stated in his report that the suspect appeared to gain entry into the house through an air return vent grill cover: this cover was partially coming out of the wall, and allowed for a 16-inch diameter crawl space into the house from the outside.

This case is still under investigation and no suspects have yet been arrested.
