Man dies from injuries in wreck
A Florida man, submerged in three feet of water for 20 minutes after a wreck on I-95, died on June 7. The man was brought back to life by the staff at Fire-Rescue and Colleton Medical Center after being critically injured in a single-vehicle wreck on Interstate 95 near mile marker 52 northbound on Tuesday May 26.
Working in three feet of water, Fire-Rescue crews used rescue tools to free the man. Gary Bullins, 57, was in cardiac arrest and suffered multiple traumatic injuries having been under the water for over 20 minutes. Crews performed CPR, secured his airway and administered medications while enroute to Colleton Medical Center.
The hospital emergency department staff continued lifesaving efforts and were able to restore pulses.
The man was transferred to the Trauma Center at Trident Medical Center but died of multiple trauma, said Colleton County Coroner Richard Harvey.

Electrical fire
damages home
A single-family dwelling in the Town of Lodge received damage in a fire started from an electrical wire.
Fire-Rescue was dispatched to a home in the 8500 block of Lodge Hwy at 9:04 p.m. when a neighbor reported smoke coming from the home. Apparently, an electrical wire shorted out, starting some towels on fire.
The blaze damaged a water heater, an appliance and the vinyl siding on the back porch. A firefighter extinguished the fire using a portable fire extinguisher. The fire was contained to the back porch. Light smoke was found inside the residence. Firefighters used a fan to force smoke from the building. No one was injured in the fire.

Water taken
on Aviation Way
A company on Aviation Way has been accused of taking 50,000 gallons of water.

Deputies responded June 1 and met with an employee of the City of Walterboro Water Department. The employee reported someone had been taking water from fire hydrants for about a week. He finally identified an individual who reportedly admitted filling up 25 times at 2,000 gallons each time for a total of 50,000 gallons.
The city is in the process of finding out how much the company owes. The company said they have talked with the water department and will pay the bill.

Timber cut
A resident on Burr Hill Road, Cottageville, reported the timber had been cut from heirs’ property.
The person said the timbercutter did not notify the other heirs who own the property about the timber cutting and did not have permission.
The deputy found a statute on unlawful timber harvesting in S.C., but told the complainant the heirs would have to provide proof from the Colleton County Magistrate Office restricting the person from cutting the timber on the site before action can be taken.

Police respond to possible virus death
On June 7 Walterboro police responded to an unresponsive elderly man at Forest Point Apartments. The man was deceased.
Colleton County Coroner Richard Harvey was called. Police talked with the man’s grandson, who said the man had tested positive for coronavirus, officers reported.
Harvey contacted family members and the man’s doctor, who confirmed the man was positive and being treated. However, cause of death has not been confirmed.
Officers were advised to be out of service until advised further notice, follow CDC guidelines and to be tested for the virus in 2-3 days, whether exhibiting symptoms or not.
