County drug dog finds meth
By HEATHER RUPPE
A county drug dog was a law enforcement hero last week when he alerted an officer to drugs hidden inside the door of a car. Consequently, the driver of the car was charged with a drug violation and taken to jail.
The incident occurred on Feb. 18th, when a deputy with the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office stopped the 24-year-old female driver for a traffic violation. According to a Colleton County Sheriff’s Office incident report, the deputy told the woman that her car did not have a license plate on it.
The woman told the deputy she did not have insurance on the car and then she denied the deputy’s request to search the vehicle. Since the woman refused to allow the deputy to search the car, the deputy then brought a K9 to the scene: during an external sniffing of the car, the dog gave a positive alert to the driver door handle and a probable cause search was conducted. The deputy found a glass pipe, a black book containing hypodermic needles and several clear baggies. The deputy also discovered more drugs inside a makeup bag.
The woman was charged with possession with intent to distribute meth.

The male suspect/driver then fled on foot into a wooded area near Bells Highway and Red Root Road. The police department tried to locate the man with a canine officer but he could not be found. There is no other information available on this case.
