Drug dog finds gun, meth during traffic stop

A canine officer with the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office helped to locate drugs and a gun during a routine traffic stop last week. The drug dog gave a positive alert for narcotics in a stopped vehicle, leading to an arrest. The incident began when a deputy with the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office stopped a vehicle at Live Oak Street and Sixth Street in Walterboro on Oct. 8th when the driver made an improper turn. According to a sheriff’s office incident report, the driver said there was no drugs in the car, and gave consent to a vehicle search. However, the drug dog immediately gave a positive alert. The deputy then found an AR-15 weapon, meth, a glass pipe and other drug paraphernalia. The 36-year-old man was charged with possession of meth.

Thief shatters window to steal gun

An unknown thief shattered a car window on Oct. 7th and stole a gun. According to a Colleton County Sheriff’s Office incident report, the car owner contacted authorities and said an unknown person broke into his locked car by smashing a window. The thief then stole a .40-caliber gun. The incident occurred in Green Pond.

Farm animals left to roam after thief steals fencing

A thief stole cow panels from a fence in Smoaks, leaving the farm animals roaming free and going into the roadway. According to a Colleton County Sheriff’s Office incident report, the larceny occurred on Oct. 9th on Community Avenue in Smoaks. The victim told deputies that he was traveling home when he saw a dark-colored truck with a 5th-wheel trailer hauling the cow panels along the roadway: the man said the panels looking similar to his. When he arrived home, he noticed his animals in the roadway and his cow panels (fencing) had been taken. The thief is wanted for larceny less than $2,000, an incident report states.

Man refuses to stop yelling, goes to jail

A 33-year-old man is charged with disturbing the peace after his neighbor called for help, saying he was yelling and breaking glass in the front yard. According to a Colleton County Sheriff’s Office incident report, deputies who responded to the Buffalo Lane residence saw the man in his yard with several other individuals. The suspect was “walking around the yard, screaming profanities and refused to talk to law enforcement.” He was arrested and taken to jail.

Knife brought to school

Law enforcement officers were called to Colleton Middle School more than five times within the last week, all to incidents of fighting among students. In one case, however, a student is accused of bringing a knife to school. According to a Colleton County Sheriff’s Office incident report, deputies were called to the school on Sept. 30th when a student was found with a knife in his possession. The 12-year-old is charged with unlawful possession of a weapon.
