Driver fails to stop

A Colleton County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop a Volkswagen Beetle on Tuskegee Airmen Drive on May 6; however, the car failed to stop.

A chase ensued on Thunderbolt Drive onto Sidneys Road. Deputies set up a spike strip at Sidneys and Round O roads, flattening one of the car’s tires.

The suspect was observed throwing a firearm out the passenger window, the deputy reported, then ran on foot into the woods. Two deputies followed.

One of the deputies said the suspect was given several commands to stop, then turned and “took an aggressive stance,” the report said. The deputy tased him.

The suspect was cleared by Fire-Rescue medics and transported to jail.

Deputies reportedly found a 12-gauge sawed off shotgun near the vehicle. The vehicle was reported stolen in Dorchester County, and the man’s driver’s license was suspended.

The suspect is charged with unlawful storage/possession of a machine gun/sawed off shotgun/rifle; failure to stop for a blue light, first offense; possession of stolen property; driving under suspension, third offense.

New boat stolen

A Sniders Highway resident reported someone took his brand new KeyLargo 206 Bay boat with a Suzuki 140 motor and trailer on May 7. The owner said he hadn’t even gotten the DNR stickers for the boat yet, nor put it in the water.

The boat is 20.5 feet, white with black motor, light tan upholstery, woodgrain console, black bimini top with a trolling motor on the front, fish finder, GPS and porta potty.

The owner last saw the boat around April 29.

A member of Jericho U.M. Church in Cottageville found someone had taken the catalytic converter off the church’s van between May 1-9. The damage is estimated at $2,000.

Surveillance camera footage is being reviewed.

Man punches deputy at jail

A Round O man was arrested for disturbing the peace in Round O on May 10. The man allegedly told deputies he committed the latest murder that occurred and had stolen the car in which he was sitting. However, when asked, he couldn’t tell deputies where he was.

Deputies said the man appeared to be under the influence, having a hard time keeping his eyes open and mood changes from calm to made in seconds.

He was arrested without incident. However, when his handcuffs were removed at the jail, he punched one of the deputies in the jaw with his closed fist. This earned him a place in the restraint chair while waiting to be booked and added third-degree assault and battery to his charges.
