Man carjacked

An unknown suspect reportedly forcibly stole the vehicle of a man trying to help him out on Dec. 14. The victim said he was at his home when an unknown white man with a beard and another suspect (whom the victim knew) approached him. They were both soaked, and said they needed a ride to their motel. However, when they arrived at the motel, the suspect said he needed to go get his clothes. The victim said he was driving to the end of Lambert Road when the backseat passenger reportedly threw a towel over his head and struck him in the head. After a short struggle, the victim told officers he was forcibly removed from the vehicle and the two drove off with his vehicle. The Colleton County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.

Mule stolen

A man got home on Dec. 14 to find his 2006 Kawasaki Mule, worth $4,000, was missing from his carport. The burgundy ATV had two rows of seats, a right tire that doesn’t match the others, and exposed wiring can be seen from the taillights, the owner said. The victim reported the keys were in the ignition, but the gates to his property on Rehoboth Road were locked. Other items in the carport were not touched. Deputies suspect the driver came on foot and drove the ATV out through the woods.

Deputy trying
to help ends up
in chase

On Dec. 10 just after midnight, a deputy saw two people walking down Bells Highway. He told officers he stopped to help as the road was very dark and busy. He asked for identification, and neither the man or woman had an ID, but gave him their names. The deputy reported they became increasingly nervous as he talked with them. A background check reported the man was wanted on an outstanding warrant in Florida. As the officer approached, the man ran. The man, with deputy in pursuit, ran through the backyard of a home at Bells Highway and Jones Swamp Road, crossed the road and toward the woods. The deputy said he told the runner repeatedly he would be tased if he didn’t stop. Eventually, the man was tased in the back. He then got a trip to the Colleton County Detention Center. The woman disappeared.

Safe, car keys gone

Unknown suspects broke a window in the front of Ryan’s Paint and Body, 3420 Jefferies Blvd., on Dec. 10-11. The suspects removed a small safe reported to contain keys to customers’ vehicles, the business’ checkbook and money. An employee noticed the broken front window when she arrived at work. Files were scattered on the floor and the safe was missing, the employee said. One vehicle, a 2018 white Dodge Ram truck was missing. The safe was located in an exterior outdoor area, apparently opened with a hammer. A Huffy bicycle was also found behind the shop that didn’t belong to anyone at the business, the report said. The missing truck is described as a white 2018 Dodge Ram with a right passenger fender and door which had just been repaired. Off-color paint had been applied to the right rear door to cover a scratch, and the right airbag was deployed. The truck’s value is estimated at $27,000.
