Shots fired on Gerideau Street

Walterboro police responded to a call of shots-fired on Gerideau, Carn, Black and Hampton streets on July 28.

Officers found over 30 shell casings, including .223, .45 and .40 calibers near the residence at 101 Gerideau St.

A person also reported their car was shot in the incident. The driver said as they were turning from Gerideau onto Hampton Street, someone began shooting at the vehicle. But no identification could be made of the shooters.

Shots fired on Grace Street

A person on Grace Street told Walterboro police that he sent his son outside to get a tool when he heard gunfire on July 28. The son ran from the scene. He told his father that two unknown black men shot at him, so he ran.

Officers found five shell casings from a Sig 10mm auto gun.

Car window shattered

A woman reported that while she was in Hardee’s, someone shattered the passenger side window of her vehicle, possibly trying to steal her purse that was in the floorboard. The window, however, was held together by its window tinting.

The Walterboro police officer cleared away the window debris so the woman could drive the car.

Man reports attempted burglary

A Gruber Street man reported someone tried to break into his house through his back sliding glass door on July 24. The attempt, however, was unsuccessful.

Video surveillance cameras shows three suspects.

Woman finds child on her steps

A Wildwood Drive resident found a child sitting on her front porch on July 24. She told Walterboro police she’d never seen the child before.

Officers found the child was very dirty, shoeless and appeared to have a mental condition. When asked, the child said he was three years old and his mother’s name was “Mommy.” They discovered the child was really eight years old and had Downs Syndrome.

After investigation, officers located a man on Wildwood Drive who was supposed to be babysitting the child. The man said he left his home for about 30 minutes, leaving the child and another adult asleep on the couch.

Officers called Fire-Rescue, who transported the child to the hospital. He was unharmed. The Dept. of Social Services was called.

Church burglary

Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to Jericho U.M. Church in Cottageville on August 2 after a reported burglary.

Witnesses said all of the church’s lawn equipment was missing from a cargo container where it was stored. Deputies found the lock on the door had been cut.

Missing were a Husqvarna zero turn lawn mower, a Husqvarna with a 32-inch deck, a Stihl weedeater and a Stihl leaf blower.

Deputies are reviewing the church’s surveillance cameras’ footage.

Another church burglary

A caller reported that a riding lawn mower was taken from Maple Cane Baptist Church in Cottageville on August 1.

A man told deputies when he arrived about 7 a.m. he noticed the church’s locked storage shed was open and the 46-inch deck lawn mower was missing.

A third church burglary

A woman reported when she arrived at Full Gospel Holiness Church in Walterboro on July 30, she found the door open. She unlocked the front door and entered, then realized the back door was open and called law enforcement.

Deputies found the back door had been kicked in. S speaker was missing from the stage area.

Elderly man swindled

An elderly man’s daughter called on July 29 to report a man taking items from her father.

A man arrived at the home and told her father he was from Ohio and had worked with him. The daughter was in another room, heard them talking and decided to check on them. But when she did, the two were gone.

The father told deputies the man said he needed money and had the victim go to an ATM and withdraw $235. He then asked to see the victim’s gold ring, which he put on his finger so he could allegedly show it to his wife. Then the man asked to borrow the victim’s cell phone to call about his truck. That was not returned to the victim either.
