Clarification
The victim of a reported hit-and-run in the June 18 edition of The Press and Standard called to report a different cause of the accident.
The victim said he was not hit by a car, but wrecked because he hit a pothole on Burlington Road. He also said the pothole, as well as many others on Burlington Road, have now been fixed.


Man charged with attempted murder
Jamar M. Grant, 26, of Walterboro was charged with attempted murder, discharging a firearm within the city limits, resisting arrest, trespassing, and pointing and/or presenting a firearm.
On July 7, Walterboro police responded to the intersection of Carn and Gerideau streets after a call of shots fired.
The two victims reported they saw a family member’s stolen car driving by and began following it. At the intersection, the car stopped and the suspect allegedly shot at the victims.
The car, reported stolen in Clarendon County, was recovered.

On July 9 a Walterboro police officer stopped a vehicle near Slugger Lane.
Approaching the vehicle, the officer said he saw the handle of a pistol in the driver’s lap. He grabbed the pistol, believing the driver was attempting to reach for it.
The car then sped away. A second officer joined the search, which traveled north of Sniders Highway to South Jefferies, Hampton Streets to North Lemacks Street, where the driver hit a tree, jumped out of the car and ran.
Officers chased the suspect on West and Verdier Streets, catching him behind Lincoln Apartments.
In the car officers found what they believed to be Ecstasy.
After being checked out by medical personnel, the driver was taken to jail, charged with failure to stop, unlawful carry of a pistol, possession with intent to distribute MDMA, and obstructing law enforcement, operating uninsured, improper vehicle license, and unregistered motor vehicle.


Credit fraud

A Walterboro police officer was flagged down on Wichman Street by a victim wanting to report fraudulent activity.
The victim stated that she was contacted by Equifax and Experian in refence to a data breach, saying that her information was among many others that was compromised. She then contacted Transunion and found multiple accounts opened in her name at Suntrust (Atlanta), Avantus, LLC (Connecticutt), MB Financial Services (Michigan), Progressive (California), Caine & Weiner (California) and TD Auto Financial (Michigan).
The victim stated that her credit score has suffered as a result and she has been contacted by debt collectors. She said that she has never visited the states in which the accounts and loans were opened.
She also said that her bank account has not been compromised.


Man shot
Colleton County deputies responded to a man with a gunshot wound to the lower bottom of his left hand and finger on July 8 at Colleton Medical Center.
The man refused to cooperative with sheriff’s deputies and did not want to file charges.


Deer in the trunk
A Colleton County Sheriff’s Office deputy stopped a car in Round O on July 9 for having a broken tail light.
After running the driver’s name to confirm his identity, the report showed an active arrest warrant in Dorchester County. He was asked to step out of the car.
The suspect told deputies there was a handgun in the passenger floorboard. What he didn’t tell them was there was also an entire deer, apparently shot, in the car’s trunk.
SCDNR was called to handle the deer violation and deputies took the suspect to jail.


Items reported taken
A resident of Catfish Court, Ridgeville, reported July 10 that when he arrive home, he found his door unlocked. Missing were a 60-inch Panasonic television, a Playstation 4, Apple laptop, HP desktop monitor, a white pool stick and Mustang keys.

Colleton County Sheriff’s Office deputies are investigating.


Home burglary reported
A resident of George Warren Drive in Ruffin called the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office to report a burglary.
When the homeowners arrived home on July 10, they realized someone had broken into their house. Missing were a black 2.33 semiautomatic pistol, two pillow cases, a box of coins and a prescription bottle of Adderall.
Deputies believe someone entered through a side door, apparently pried open with a crowbar.


Items gone from work truck
A Phillips Road resident told Colleton County Sheriff’s Office deputies July 10 that someone took a .40 Smith and Wesson semiautomatic pistol and $3,105 in cash from his work van, which was parked in his yard.


Ankle bracelet

Police officers got a call from a monitoring company that a suspect wearing an ankle bracelet wasn’t where he was supposed to be.
The suspect was supposed to be at Sheldon Court, but when officers arrived, they were told he was gone. The company then said the monitor was showing a location on Green Pond Highway. But that home belonged to an elderly man who didn’t know the offender.
Finally, police located the ankle bracelet in a ditch near the Green Pond Highway home. The offender was not located.
