Mary Jo Craven 81, of Walterboro, passed away Friday evening, February 21, 2025, at Roper Hospital in Charleston, with her family by her side. Mary Jo was born May 6, 1943, a daughter of the late Riddick Earl Craven and Mary Ruth Carson Craven. In 1960, after graduating high school, she entertained the thought of becoming an airline stewardess. After that schooling, she settled back in South Carolina, where she worked a 45-year career with South Carolina Bank and Trust, now known as South State Bank. She was beloved there by her co-workers and customers alike. Mary Jo was a lifetime member of Bethel Baptist Church on Sidneys Road. She loved her church family and especially loved the children she taught in her Precious Children Sunday School Class. Surviving are: her daughters, Paige Gibbons (Jarrett) and Kelly K. Hiers, her children from her marriage to the late Thomas J. Hiers. She is also survived by her grandson, Sawyer Thomas Gibbons; her granddaughter, Reese Gibbons; her youngest sister, Sandy Craven; her brother-in-law, Buddy Connelly; and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Judy Connelly; and a nephew, Riddick Seth Hiott. Mary Jo dearly loved her family and will be deeply missed by all. Funeral services will be held 11 o’clock, Saturday morning, March 1, 2025, at Bethel Baptist Church, 3481 Sidneys Road, Walterboro. The family will receive friends following the service.
