Colleton Prep hosted a middle school football jamboree on Thursday, August 19th at Warhawk Stadium.

The five teams that participated were Colleton Prep, Northwood Academy, Pinewood Prep, Holy Trinity, and Thomas Heyward. Each team participated in a round-robin type tournament, engaging in a 40 yard shootout with each scrimmage lasting 24 minutes.

Colleton Prep managed to split their games, winning against Thomas Heyward 18-0 and Holy Trinity 15-13. The Hawks did drop two games by identical scores of 8-6 to Northwood Academy and Pinewood Prep.

“The purpose of the middle school program is to prepare these young kids for the varsity team when their time comes. We try to run the same plays and formations as the varsity so they will be familiar with the system at the next level and contribute right away. Hopefully, we will have some eight graders who will be promoted to the varsity when our season is complete and they’ll be able to contribute,” said first year head coach, Josh Craven.

Craven cited right tackle/nose guard B.J. Gillispie, slot receiver and free safety Perry Corbett, quarter-back and strong safety Cale Owens, defensive tackle/center William Williams, and seventh grader Fenn Nelson as having good scrimmages. He also cited the play of receiver Mark Odum, who ran and caught the ball well during the scrimmage.

“Our offensive line really did a nice job today. Those five guys did a good job of run blocking, and a great job in pass protection,” Craven reported. “(It was a) really good experience for the kids to get the feel for game-type situations, and to play under the lights in front of a crowd before our first game.”

The first game for the middle school team will be Thursday, August 25th against Holy Trinity. Game time is 6:00 PM.
