Citizens and elected officials gathered at the County Complex on Wednesday, April 23rd for the dedication and statue unveiling at the Dr. Joe Flowers Park. The new park located around the County Building at 109 Benson Street features new landscaping, brickwork, historical signage, and plaques with the names of elected officials dating back to the early days of Colleton County. Councilman Scott Beiring opened the event with Councilman Philip Taylor giving the invocation. Councilman Steven Murdaugh gave a tribute to Dr. Flowers, who served 25 years on the Colleton County Council. Crawford Moore, the Mayor of Edisto Beach, presented a proclamation to Dr. Flowers. Mayor Bill Young of Walterboro and Janice Blocker, who served with Dr. Flowers on County Council, also spoke at the event. Dr. Flowers, who turns 90 in December and just retired from the council, spoke briefly at the event. He said he was honored with the gesture and thanked all in attendance. A meet and greet followed the event for the approximately 75 people in attendance. The crowd viewed the statue and took pictures with Dr. Flowers.
