Colleton County Council has designated the month of February as Black History Month. The resolution was passed at council’s virtual meeting, which was held during their regularly scheduled meeting on January 4.
Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in United States history.
Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month.
Events are planned for the month throughout the county to celebrate the month and African American culture.
In other business:
Council members also authorized the council clerk to advertise for the following board vacancies: Colleton County Library Board of Trustees has one vacancy; Colleton County Land Use Zoning Board of Appeals has one vacancy; and Colleton County Keep Colleton Beautiful has two vacancies.
The following individuals were appointed to board vacancies: Colleton County Fire and Rescue Commission had three vacancies and three applicants who were appointed - Gerald Breland, LaVern Polk, and Mark Farish - and the Colleton County Land Use Zoning Board of Appeals had one vacancy and applicant Samuel Bethay was approved.
