The Colleton County Cougars were hoping for a little home cooking as they sought their first win of the season against the Ashley Ridge Swamp Foxes. After Friday night’s game, the Cougars are still on the prowl for that first win of the year as the Swamp Foxes left with a 60-12 victory over the Cougars.
“We started out playing pretty good against them early, but things started going downhill toward the end of the first quarter-and the game got away from us really quick. We gave them (Ashley Ridge) too many turnovers deep in our territory that gave the Swamp Foxes a short field to play on. Despite the outcome of the game, I thought our kids hung in there and did not quit,” said Howell.
The Swamp Foxes would score first with 1:51 left in the first quarter after recovering a fumble deep in Cougar territory. After a short punt, the Swamp Foxes would score on a 14-yard touchdown pass to make the score 14-0 with 10:56 remaining in the second quarter.
Ashley Ridge would then recover a fumble and score with 5:59 left in the half to make the score 22-0. The Swamp Foxes would add an additional score on a 4 yard run to make the score 28-0.
Antwain McMillan would spark the Cougars when he returned the kick-off 72 yards to make the score 28-6 at half-time.
Any momentum the Cougars might have had in the third quarter was quickly erased when Ashley Ridge scored on a 57-yard run on the first play of the second half, making the score 35-6 with 11:39 remaining in the third quarter.
The Cougars would then answer with a 67-yard touchdown pass from Quarterback Mykeem Gant to Darien Stephens, making the score 35-12 with 11:39 left in the third quarter.
Ashley Ridge would then score 25 unanswered points to make the final score 60-12.
The Cougars managed less than 200 yards in total offense but had four turnovers, which led to scores for the Swamp Foxes. Defensively, the Cougars only gave up 293 yards of offense but were put in bad situations because of the turnovers.
“Only thing to do is to go back to practice and continue to work on our mistakes, and try to eliminate the turnovers. We had a bunch of kids to get hurt so we have to get everyone healthy before next week,” said Howell.
The Cougars are set to host North Charleston next Friday. Game time is 7:30
