The Colleton County Cougar Basketball team will enter Region VII-AAAA competition this week after picking up two wins and a loss last week. The Cougars are currently 7-8 overall including tournament play. They were scheduled to travel to Beaufort High School Tuesday Jan. 14 before hosting Bluffton Friday Jan. 14.

In a 61-40 win over non-region opponent Swansea High School Tuesday Jan. 7, the Cougars started slow but came out strong in the second half. They were led by Alex Sherrill with 32 points. Other scoring included Stephan Gadson 8, Jahlil Ellison 7, Antwan Griffin 5, Jermaine Parker 4, Jeremiah Monroe 4 and Deshaun Blocker 4.

Swansea was led by Taylor with 30 points and Reed with 17 points.

“We had a slow start in this one,” said Coach Matt Mullins. “We struggled to finish easy plays in the first half for some reason, but then came out strong in the second half and we were able to get to the free throw line a lot. We were aggressive getting into the paint, especially Alex Sherrill. I think he shot eight free throws in the third quarter alone. If we are hitting free throws and getting to the rim normally, our outside shots start to fall as well. We need to remember that as a team as the season goes on.”

In a home game against First Baptist Friday Jan. 10, the Cougars fell 71-59. Sherrill led Colleton County scoring 25 points. Other scoring included Griffin 10, Gadson 9, Parker 5, Ellison 5, Alston Sherrill 3 and Holmes 2.

First Baptist was led by Percurrci with 17 points and Cole with 15 points.

The Cougars picked up a road win over Whale Branch High School 54-50 Saturday Jan. 11. Alex Sherrill led with 21 points and Stephan Gadson chipped in 15 points. Other scoring included Ellison 9, Parker 4, Griffin 3 and Butler 2.

Whale Branch was led by Williams with 15 points and Pringle with 12 points.
