The Colleton County varsity basketball team has been spending the days following Christmas participating in the Modie Risher Classic, the area’s oldest boys’ basketball tournament (established 1967) named for the former high school coach, administrator and official at Burke High School. The Cougars fell to Hedgeville (West Virginia) 60-49 and to Central Bucks West (Doylestown, PA) 48-40.
In game one played Friday Dec. 27 against Hedgeville High School, Colleton County was led by Stephen Gadson with 26 points. Antwan Griffin added 10 points and Jahlil Ellison chipped in 8 points. Also scoring for the Cougars were Alex Sherrill 3, Jeremiah Monroe 2 and Jermaine Parker 2.
Four Hedgeville Eagles reached double figures with Javin Wilmer scoring 15, Evan Hosby 14, Jameson Matthew 11 and Sheldon Everhart 10.
Against Central Bucks West on Saturday Dec. 28, Alex Sherrill led with 16 and Gadson added 13. Other scoring included Holmes 5, Griffin 4 and Ellison 1.
Dan Miller led the Bucks (8-3) scoring 13 points and pulling down eight rebounds. Other scoring included Spratt 8, Munari 7,Haney 5, Neri 5 and Slaymaker 5.
The Cougars were scheduled to face their final opponent in the consolation round of the holiday tournament Monday Dec. 30. They return to regular season competition Friday Jan. 3 on the road against Military Magnet.
